Anglospeak

I was talking to an Indian-trained theoretical physicist recently and he said he hates the Indian education system, at least in physics. I can attest to this. I’ve look at some of the texts they use and it’s a very different culture. It’s all about calculating and little understanding. I have a book of about 1200 physics problems (Irodov) which I’ve heard the students who want to into the area read and solve every problem. The only problem is that physics is nothing like that textbook. That textbook is a bunch of archaic difficult mechanics problems that you get in first year physics. Sure they are fun to do every now and then again to brush up on a certain set of problem solving skills, but it hardly teaches you physics. In fact, beyond first year I’ve never really done those types of problems again. They hardly teach you anything about physics at all, just how to do a bunch of boring mechanics problems. Actual physics is much much different and relies little on these skills. I don’t deny they aren’t important, but they just aren’t what physicists do all day long.

Now why did I mention the Indian theorist? Well he said he hated physics because of this very mindset! It wasn’t until he got a different text (Halliday and Resnick I believe) and it changed his viewpoint. Physics was more then just applying the same principles again and again to increasingly obtuse block and mass systems! Being an expert at these problems doesn’t make you a good physicist.

Now this is just my experience with the small subset of the Indian education system for physics. To me it is detrimental to the education of physicists and I think it is for the worse.
